A total of eight health professionals are among the new 54 COVID-19 cases announced for Bayelsa State on Wednesday.


The Deputy Chairman of the state COVID-19 Task Force, Dr Inodu Apoku, who said this in Yenagoa while confirming the 54 coronavirus patients within the state, lamented that the state was on the verge of recording an escalation within the number of coronavirus infections.

He said, “Yesterday, we received results from 76 samples. Fifty-four of those returned positive for COVID-19. This brings the entire number of confirmed cases to 86 within the state. We expect more test results from today also .

Eleven of those positive cases are contacts of previously confirmed cases. Eight are health care professionals.”

Apoku, who is additionally the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, expressed fear that Bayelsa was now handling community transmission of the virus.

“In the past two weeks, we've had over 300 pending samples of COVID-19 suspected cases in various COVID-19 laboratories across the South-South. The laboratories were having issues with reagents and supplies and intrinsically , the delays in returning results
